Claudio Ranieri resigns as coach of Serie A side Roma

Ranieri managed Chelsea between 2000 and 2004
Former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri has resigned as coach of Serie A side Roma after they crashed to a fourth-successive defeat.
Roma imploded at Genoa on Sunday, going down 4-3, having at one stage led 3-0.
The defeat leaves Roma nine points behind city rivals Lazio in fourth spot, which provides the chance to qualify for the Champions League.
Ranieri, who managed Chelsea from 2000 to 2004, took charge of Roma in September 2009.
The 59-year-old Italian has also coached a number of other Serie A teams, including Juventus, as well as Spanish clubs Valencia and Atletico Madrid.
In midweek, Roma's Champions League campaign suffered a severe setback after the 3-2 home defeat by Shakhtar Donetsk in the Stadio Olimpico.
This week, American consortium DiBenedetto was also given a 30-day period for exclusive talks to buy the cash-strapped club.

Stoke end battling win at Watford

An own goal by goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes helped earn Stoke City a deserved win as 10-man Watford suffered a first home defeat since August. Gomes could do little as Charlie Adam's header from Xherdan Shaqiri's corner hit the base of the post before ricocheting off the Brazilian and rolling into the net. If there was a touch of fortune about the goal, Stoke were full value for their victory against sluggish opponents who missed out on the chance to climb to sixth in the Premier League table. Watford had defender Miguel Britos sent off in the closing stages for a second yellow card after Gomes had saved well from Bruno Martins Indi, while Stoke's club record £18.3m signing Giannelli Imbula also went close from 25 yards. Birmingham fined for Carling Cup pitch invasion Fans ran on to the pitch at the end of the match against Villa Birmingham City have been fined £40,000 by the Football Association for failing to control their fans after the Carling Cup quarter-final against Aston Villa. More than 1,000 supporters invaded the pitch following the 2-1 victory for Blues over their west Midlands rivals on 1 December. An independent commission said £20,000 of the fine would be suspended until the end of the 2013/2014 season. The club was also warned about its future conduct. The victory for Birmingham was marred by the trouble which involved fans running on to the pitch after the final whistle to confront visiting supporters at the other end of the ground. A flare appeared to be thrown into the section housing the Villa supporters, and seats were also ripped out and used as missiles along with other objects. Fourteen people were treated in hospital and five were arre...
